PHILOSOPHY

What can philosophers tell us?
This is a part of a larger question: What can anyone tell us?

How do you fit the great thinkers into one narrative? How do you combine the "truths" of Heidegger and Wittgenstein? (How do you mash up the early Wittgenstein and the later Wittgenstein?)

What about giving an epistemological quotient for our facts? Can we do that? (Do we not speak in facts?)

How will we ever feel that some basic philosophical questions are stupid?

How will we know what questions are false questions?

How will we know when words are bing used in their appropriate language-game?

What is it to describe the use of a word in a language-game?

To what extent are the limitations of language caused by the limitations of humans?

The phrase "limits of language" is after all a metaphor. So what are we actually talking about?

Why don't all thoughtful people think like me?

RELIGION

What have we forgotten if we have forgotten the sacred?

REASON

How do we separate the reasonable from that which only seems reasonable?

PERSONAL / Self

Do I have a better grasp of the world situation than people who disagree with me?

Would the world be any better if everyone was like me?

In a group of 50 people, pick out the person who most like you. How would you choose?

It occurs to me now more frequently: what color is my parachute?

Am I not shallow enough?

CONTEMPORARY

What if all the the poor, the immigrants and everyone on welfare, were really good looking?

How do you build a rational and healthy society out of assholes?

How do you run for the presidency of a loony bin?

I am reading George Leonard's Education and Ecstasy, written in 1968. It puts me in mind of that good and partly forgotten time filled with shared optimism and strengths. How could it be so different than the present?

Where the hell did we get that idea?

Which is more depressing? That no one out there thinks like you? Or that many people out there do think like you but it makes no difference?
